Democratic candidates for governor dispute review of oil tax laws

from KTUU Channel 2: Oil taxes are becoming a major issue in the 2010 race for governor, amidst claims oil companies will pull out of Alaska because taxes are too high. Gov. Sean Parnell recently called for a review of the Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share law that sets oil taxes.

French, however, says it’s too soon to make any changes to the oil tax system.

“I’d be opposed to any changes in ACES this year,” French said. “Because I think it’s too soon to tell whether any differences in investment on the North Slope are driven by our tax laws, or driven by the reduction in the price of barrel of oil since 2008, or driven by the general local recession that we’re experiencing.”
